Coffee Options in Wayland Square

Wayland Square on Providence's East Side, long renowned for being the likely birth place of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, is currently home to a handle for viable coffee stops. Honestly, the area is saturated with coffee. As someone who spends a ton of time in WS, I thought I'd make all the rookies out there a list of possibilities.

1. Starbucks
468 Angell St, Providence, RI 02906

Just like all the others. It wants to feel dark and swanky.

2. Teas and Javas
199 Wayland Ave, Providence, RI 02906

Not a chain, this cool little cafe features open air seating when the weather permits, an impressive pastry case, and soup/salad/sandwich lunch combos. The pastries are not made on site, but they are gorgeous so all is forgiven. Teas & Javas also has gelato! They do have wifi so if you're looking for a work space less crowded than Starbucks, look no further. Personally, I just pop in here for a coffee or tea but I have eaten lunch  here in the past so its doable. Not bad, not bad at all. It wants to feel retro.

3. L'Artisan Cafe and Bakery
9 Wayland Ave, Providence, RI 02906

However you want to say it, because locals all butcher it. What I like here is the small meals to go. Cheese and grapes in a little package together, fresh pita chips, chicken or tuna salad, bean salad, etc. The pre-made sandwiches are fresh first thing in the  morning but really after lunch time tend to dry out in the case. The cookies and breakfast pastries are yummy. Coffee drinks use Illy brand so you know what you're getting with that. It wants to feel European.

4. Wayland Bakery
138 Wayland Ave, Providence, RI 02906

I can't give this a fair assessment because I've always wanted to go in but never has. It has been in the square since 1928 and so I just have to assume that if they serve pastries and baked good, then they must serve some sort of coffee. I'll put it on the to-do list. It wants to feel like an old school bakery.

5. Whole Foods
261 Waterman St, Providence, RI 02906

Their Allegro label coffee is on a small coffee station at the end of the salad bar. No full service cafe as in some Whole Foods. Still, within walking distance of Wayland Square if you need groceries AND coffee. Maybe coffee to get through the groceries? It want to feel like a natural grocer.

6. East Side Marketplace
165 Pitman St, Providence, RI 02906

Down the hill from Wayland Square is another shopping plaza where this local grocer has an eat-in area that serves coffee. Don't go crazy here, just something simple and straight forward. It's not a destination coffee spot. In fact, I generally only get coffee here if I'm on my lunch break, grabbing groceries, am out of time, and am out of energy. It wants to feel like a plain old grocery store.
