Blackstone to Westminster: A Providence Saturday
This morning T had to run off to work first thing for a full day of non-stop athletic events so Edison and I were left to our own devices. Determined to made the best of a Saturday without T, the pooch and I got our rears in gear. Mostly he got my rear in gear as he relentlessly licked my exposed feet at the end of the bed and then invited himself up onto my pillow to whine in my ear. Eventually, I got the point and we headed out the door. We stopped at LaSalle Bakery for coffee and pastry which, despite having to hunt for parking, was delicious as usual. Those strawberry cheese danishes get me every time. Then we cruised over to Edison's new favorite spot, Blackstone Park.
This was the second time I'd taken him there and it couldn't be more enjoyable. The park is a wooded area over looking the river with trails carefully defined by logs and low fences. That its Autumn right now and the foliage is gorgeous and that the weather was perfect for a walk in the woods were wonderful, but the best part of Blackstone for us is the dog friendly atmosphere. Tons of locals bring their dogs here to run around off leash. This is exactly the type of park we had been missing for months prior to our move to Providence. After our romp in the woods, having met many new friends, we popped over to see T on the job and chase some squirrels.
I brought Edison home and ventured out on my own to a place that my aunt had suggested I check out, Craftland, on Westminster St. It was such a fun little shop! There was a ton to take in but all of it was worth a look. Gifts, clothes, art, jewelry, etc. all made by local RI artists. Parking is on the street, pay at the meter or kiosk. Westminster is a one way which gets annoying when you are looking for parking so I actually left the car on Washington St.
One of the reasons I was so excited to have gone down to Westminster St. today is that there are a ton of other shops and restaurants in the same area as Craftland. So I ended up checking out four other spots while I was there. The first after Craftland was Symposium Books which was a dark, den of new and possibly used books at full and reduced prices. There were chairs scattered about for leisurely reading and a steady stream of foot traffic. Next I popped across the street to Homestyle which is probably one of the best smelling stores I've ever been in due to the large volume of fancy candles. I could do some serious Christmas shopping in that store. Home decor, gifts, clothes, accessories, and just general whimsy. Over to Queen of Hearts and Modern Love which are two boutiques for women that are connected by an open doorway in the wall that they share.

At this point I knew the time on my meter was running out and so was my energy so I walked into Small Point Cafe for a pumpkin latte which must have been made with actual pumpkin puree because it tasted straight out of the patch. But seriously, there was real pumpkin at the bottom of my cup when I finished my latte. After a quick re-fuel I called it quits and headed home for a snuggle with the pup. I'd say I did my fair share of exploration in downtown PVD today. Mission accomplished.
