Minerva's Pizza in Wayland Square
I recently started a new job that is less than a mile from where T works. This fits perfectly into my plans to steal him away for romantic lunch dates during the week. To celebrate the completion of my first full week at work, we met up on a Friday. Our lunch dates will have to be speedy because I have a 45 minute break which feels long when I stick around the building but can go fast when I venture out. We're not really the type to meet at a fast food chain so were going to have to do our best to go local while watching the clock. On this first of many outings we went for pizza at Minerva's in Wayland Square. For lunch on a Friday, the restaurant was shockingly slow. I asked the waitress if they did most of their lunch business as take-out orders. She said that actually January was a really slow month because, she assumed, patrons were bogged down with bills from Christmas. Since I had the entire restaurant at my disposal, I asked if we could sit at the bar since its next to the window.
There were four or five stools and a TV that was tuned in to CNN. The bar area was fairly ugly and outdated but it was clean. There were only three taps to choose from (Bud, Bud Lite, and Coors if you're a big spender). T was finding parking (per usual in PVD street parking is rather tricky) and since I had one eye on the clock over the bar, I ordered an entree Garden Salad for the two of us to share and a large Meat Lover's Pizza as well. One of T's favorite pizzas is the Meat Lover's from Hoagie's Pizza and Pasta with various locations in Vermont. As of late, we have been trying to find one to rival this favorite. The pizza at Minerva's was right out of the oven. Literally, we watched it come out of the oven and then over to the bar top in front of us. It was a little on the bland side if that makes sense. I mean, it had sausage and pepperoni and cheese and a crust that was soft on the bottom and crunchy on the edges but it just wasn't that great UNTIL I had the leftover slices for dinner later that night. THEN it was delightful. I think we just ate it too hot the first time around and so couldn't really taste all the components.
The salad was your generic pizza place salad. Ice-berg lettuce with a few red onions, cukes, hot peppers, and a handful of kalamata olives that still had the pits. Almost broke a tooth on the first one. The house dressing was a generic Greek vinaigrette that was okay for the salad but better for dipping the pita bread in that they brought us as a starter. The bill was around $23.00 dollars without tip so not bad for lunch for two and dinner for me later because of leftovers. I can see us going back to Minerva's for a quick bite. It is as it should be, a decent pizzeria with subs and sandwiches to serve the needs of the lunch crowd.
